You know what question I hate? I hate when I get asked how long it took me to get published. Because by merely saying the words "twenty years," I am making myself sound like both an enormous loser and a total dinosaur. (Yeah - double-threat girl; whoo!)
But the GINORMO reason I hate it is that it is absolutely NOT encouraging to those getting started. Who wants to wait that long?
So I prefer to focus on the fact that writing is one of the few vocations in the world where you need NOTHING - no degree, no resume, no Wall Street wardrobe - and the big IT can happen for you.
Schooling helps your craft, of course, and a kickass wardrobe makes you feel like a total goddess (or god - no sexism here), but the reality is nothing matters but your words.
If you work hard and write, write, write, it can happen for anyone - at any time.
Set aside time - SET ASIDE TIME BECAUSE YOU WILL NEVER JUST FIND IT - and write. Yes, it took me a LONG time to get my first book deal, but there are people out here getting those deals right out of the gate, as well.
You want it? GO GET IT! Sit down and write. Write your heart out. Write the good, the bad, and the awful, and eventually - today or in ten years - you will be rewarded.
Please go to the header and click on "blog" for the latest post on writing and publishing. There are so many behind-the-curtain things about this industry that we - as writers - know nothing about as we write our little fingers off and query like query-loving beasts.
I'm excited to share tips and secrets that might help my fellow daydreamers in the trenches, because in reality, we all want the same thing - to see our words in print.
Just keep writing - you've got this, friend.
